Why older people are more prone to falling

As a senior living in Maryland, you face certain risks and hazards that can make you more likely to fall and injure yourself. While some of the risk factors are weather and climate-related, others increase as you age, and they can compound with one another to further enhance your risk of a serious injury to your head, back or other body part. At the Law Offices of Scott N. Bergman, LLC, we have a thorough understanding of how fall-related injuries can impact your life, and we have helped many clients who fell because of the negligence of others seek recourse.

According to AgingCare.com, Americans tend to move less as they age, and a decrease in your level of physical activity can weaken your bones and muscles, placing you at greater risk of taking a tumble. Your eyesight, too, typically declines as you age, and this can make you less likely to spot potential hazards, such as loose carpeting.

In addition to loose carpeting, other environmental factors can cause you to fall, among them cluttered floors, wet floors or wires placed in dangerous areas. Many older people also rely on prescription medications for various conditions, but it is important to recognize that certain medications, and certain combinations of medications, can affect balance and cause dizziness.

If you are a senior and also recovering from a recent surgical procedure, take extra precautions when moving around. You may unintentionally rely on one side of your body more than the other, increasing your risk of falling and suffering injury, or you may simply feel weak, in pain or otherwise not like yourself, which can also enhance your chances of falling down. More about slip-and-fall accidents is available on our web page.
