Traumatic brain injury: a collision of soft tissue and bony skull

Traumatic brain injury can result from a variety of incidents, including everything from high-impact sports to car accidents and perpetrated violence. If you are a Maryland resident who is suffering from headaches, dizziness or sound and light sensitivity, you may want to learn more about potential causes of brain trauma. At the Law Offices of Scott N. Bergman, LLC, we have assisted a number of clients struggling to understand why they have a traumatic head injury.

Many people believe getting hit in the head is the only way to injure the brain, but the Mayo Clinic reports additional possibilities. In addition to a direct blow to the head, a severe jolt that causes the brain to bump against the skull can bruise the soft tissue, resulting in injury. If you have been in a car accident, you may have experienced such a jolt from the immediate impact when your head instantly snapped backward and then forward again. Even if your seat belt and the airbags protected you from slamming against a window or the steering wheel, the sudden motion may have been enough to create a collision of soft brain tissue with bony skull structure.

Other TBI causes you may recognize include:

  • Explosions that produce sudden jolts
  • Objects that penetrate the skull
  • Swelling or blood clots caused by other medical conditions

Some contributing events include, as previously mentioned, high-impact sports, combat explosions and car accidents. In addition, your children and your elderly parents are especially susceptible to brain trauma when they slip unexpectedly. Even a seemingly nonthreatening fall from the bed can cause problems for young and old brains alike. For more information on traumatic brain injury, visit our webpage.
