What are the symptoms of amnesia?

When you incur a brain injury in Maryland, you may worry that you might also get amnesia. While amnesia does not occur with every brain injury, it is important to recognize the symptoms so you can get help if you need it.

Amnesia usually occurs because your brain has incurred damage. The Mayo Clinic says that you might experience amnesia if you suffered a mild head injury, such as a concussion. However, you may also have amnesia if your brain was harmed because of a seizure or stroke or if it became inflamed during an illness. When one of these incidents causes amnesia, your brain's limbic system is typically harmed.

You typically experience neurological amnesia after a brain injury. It can cause you to have difficulty retaining new information and also make you feel confused. As you recover, your memory usually returns. You may find that your amnesia is worse if your head injury was severe and in some cases a person might experience permanent memory problems.

There are several symptoms that can indicate that you have amnesia. You may find that you are disoriented and in some cases you may experience false memories. While you may worry that you will not remember how to do simple things such as read and write, this usually does not occur. You typically are still able to carry on conversations and you also retain your ability to perform simple tasks. Most of the time amnesia affects your short-term memory. You may find that you cannot remember what you had for dinner while you may remember specific events from your childhood.
