Property owners’ slip-and-fall responsibilities

Anytime you visit a public place where the walking surface is wet or oily, you can risk slipping and falling. This is especially true this time of year, when rainy or snowy conditions in Maryland can make parking lots, sidewalks and store entryways hazardous. At the Law Offices of Scott N. Bergman, LLC, we feel it is important to let you know the ways in which store owners and property managers must attempt to make their premises safer for you and others in slippery conditions.

According to EHS Today, slip-and-fall accidents account for a large portion of accidents at the workplace. When you account for falls that occur off the job as well, you can see the magnitude of the problem. There are a few steps you can take to reduce your chances of ending up in the emergency room due to a fall this winter. When getting in and out of your car, you will want to watch out for slushy or icy spots on the ground. Walk carefully in parking lots and on sidewalks, and take care in entryways, where puddles of water, mud and slush often gather. Be sure to step on mats and wipe your shoes off before walking on tile or linoleum.

Despite your precautions, you may not be able to avoid a fall in unsafe conditions. It is up to the owners of office buildings, shopping centers and apartment buildings to take the appropriate measures when weather conditions contribute to unsafe conditions. These include de-icing sidewalks, putting up warning signs, providing non-slip mats and ensuring handrails are in good repair. You may learn more about weather-related premises liability issues by visiting our page on slippery conditions in snow and ice.
