Are you ready for the Christmas shopping season?

Christmas time is almost here, which means that the stores are going to be busier than normal. The great deals, especially on Black Friday, will have some people rushing to grab them before the items are gone.

All of this means that now is the time to plan your shopping excursions. One thing that you need to plan for is your safety. Many people don't realize that heading to the store can be a dangerous prospect.

Dangers that you face

There are two types of dangers that are especially prevalent during the holiday shopping season -- crowds and merchandise. Trampling injuries are one of the dangers you face when there are large crowds in the store. If you think back to past Black Friday sales, you can probably remember news stories of this type of needless tragedy occurring, especially at big box stores.

Merchandise in the store can be hazardous. It can fall off the shelves and cause a tripping danger. If it is stacked high on the shelves, it can fall on you. This is why it is imperative for stores to keep the items neatly placed. Workers should be available to ensure the floors remain free of trip hazards.

Other dangers you face during the holiday shopping season include injuries from shopping carts tipping over, parking lot accidents and wet floors. Making sure that carts, the parking lot, and the floors are in good condition can help to prevent these types of accidents.

Injuries that may occur

The types of injuries you might face can vary from bruising and scrapes up to death. Spinal cord injuries, head injuries, broken bones and neck injuries are also possible.

If you are injured in a shopping accident, you should make sure that you report the incident to the appropriate person. You should also seek medical care to receive a diagnosis and get started on a treatment plan.

Covering the damages

The expenses that you incur because of the accident are considered damages. You might decide that you want the shopping venue to cover those expenses. This could lead to a legal claim for compensation. You need to show that the store was negligent, had knowledge of the hazard and didn't take proper steps to rectify the hazard. You will also have to show that the accident caused your injuries and the injuries cause the damages. Including other points in your claim might also be necessary.
