What should you do when someone goes into shock?

The trauma that comes from a car accident can easily be enough to send anyone into shock. If you get into a crash in Maryland or witness an accident, knowing how to handle shock can save the lives of others.

Mayo Clinic states that emergency services should be called immediately if the signs of shock are present. Fortunately, this is the first reaction most people will have if the accident is bad enough to cause injuries. This is especially good because shock can set in quickly and may even become fatal if left untreated. This is due to the lack of blood and oxygen the body gets while it's in a state of shock.

If any areas are bleeding, pressure should be applied. You should also take care when moving people around because of the potential of spine injuries. However, if you notice someone bleeding from the mouth or vomiting, turning them to their side will help keep their airways clear and prevent them from choking.

Elevating the legs or feet of the sufferer slightly can help with blood flow, which is in jeopardy at this time. Additionally, tight clothing may be loosened for further comfort, or the person may be covered by your jacket or any blanket you have on hand. This can keep their body temperature from dropping too far, which is a risk. Don't provide the person going into shock with any food or drink, as they can easily choke.

Of course, these are just tips to help until medical professionals arrive on the scene. However, if you can recognize the signs of shock and you're uninjured enough to help, you may be saving someone's life.
