Just how dangerous are wet floors?

You see the caution signs all the time in shopping centers, airports, or any other public place in Maryland that has a slick floor. Whenever someone mops the floor up or spills water on it, a sign cautioning people that it's wet is supposed to be put up. But are these warnings necessary? How dangerous are wet floors?

The truth is, wet floors can actually cause you to suffer from some pretty severe injuries. The Work Safe Center states that wet floors are one of the major contributing factors to slip and fall accidents, which can result in injuries like:

  • Broken bones
  • Sprains
  • Head injury
  • Spine damage

Bruising, abrasions, and cuts may also occur depending on where the wet floor is. For example, if you slip and fall on the concrete, you have a higher chance of getting cut or having your skin rubbed raw by the pavement.

Wet floors can even lead to death in some cases, especially if you hit your head or fall into a dangerous area because of the slip. It was also noted that slip and fall accidents come second only to motor vehicle accidents in terms of accidental deaths, so it's an issue that needs to be taken seriously.

The caution signs are meant to be used for a reason. Despite what some may think, wet floors are very dangerous. It doesn't matter how carefully you walk or how good you think the tread on your shoes is. Wet and slick floors should always be avoided.
