Brain injury basics

Understanding the different types of brain injuries that can happen is important for Maryland residents. These injuries include a broad range of causes and effects and can happen anytime, anywhere. The Brain Injury Association of America explains that these injuries may be acquired such as with a birth injury but they may also be traumatic such as those that result from accidents

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Injury Prevention Center, over 40 percent of all brain injuries are caused by falls. More than 14 percent happen after vehicle accidents. Traumatic brain injuries may be severe or mild, the latter of which are commonly called concussions. Many people may be quick to dismiss a concussion as minor but the effects and problems that a concussion can cause require proper attention and can hamper many parts of a person's life.

Per WebMD, a person who has experienced a concussion may show cognitive, emotional and physical signs of the injury. Cognitive symptoms may include loss of memory, confusion and poor concentration. Emotional problems may include signs of depression or other personality changes. Headaches, visual disturbances and light sensitivities are among the physical symptoms.

Other physical signs of a concussion include vomiting or upset stomach, difficulties properly forming or pronouncing words, impaired balance, fatigue and sensititives to sounds or even ringing in the ears. These problems may last for some time but also may not be evident immediately after an injury has happened. People may want to track their symptoms after an accident.
