Slip-and-fall accidents more severe for older Americans

A slip-and-fall accident can happen to anyone at anytime. But, just because it is a universal accident does not mean that everyone is affected in the same way. As we age, our bodies may be less resilient in recovering from an accident.

How are the oldest Americans affected by slip-and-fall accidents?

A new report from the Centers for Disease Control found that elderly people are more likely to experience a slip-and-fall accident, but are less likely to report it. Despite the risks, older adults often fear that reporting a fall will cause them to lose their independence.

Not only are older adults more likely to experience a fall, but they are also more likely to suffer a traumatic brain injury (TBI) as a result of a fall. Even a minor TBI can have significant consequences for the elderly as one in three returns to the emergency room within 90 days of a fall, according to the report.

Why is this trend so concerning?

The likelihood of TBI as a result of a slip-and-fall accident is high. Most people can recover from TBI with the proper treatment, but because slip-and-fall accidents are under-reported among elderly Americans, full recovery may not be obtainable.

The potential effects of TBI are especially concerning because older Americans are also more likely to experience a natural decline in brain health through conditions such as dementia or Alzheimer's disease. Suffering a TBI can hasten the likelihood and potential effects of brain diseases.

How can slip-and-fall accident victims seek recovery?

The ability to go to the grocery store and complete routine errands is a critical part of maintaining independence as we grow older. However, half of all falls happen outside the home. When this occurs outside of a person's own property, the victim and his or her loved ones may be able to seek compensation under premises liability

Proving a slip-and-fall accident is not easy, but with the right legal help, it is possible to obtain compensation for medical bills and personal harm. Premises liability is based on a property owner's duty to safety. When a person enters a home or business, they have the reasonable expectation that they will not be hurt in a slip-and-fall accident.

Through awareness of the effects of TBI on the elderly and a property owner's liability, Americans can commit to preventing slip-and-fall accidents.
