3rd bus-pedestrian accident in Montgomery County kills woman

As readers know, buses are huge vehicles, often the largest ones on the road. A bus driver who does not use reasonable care can cause a great deal of harm to other motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians.

Unfortunately, there have been three pedestrian accidents involving buses in Montgomery County since the beginning of the year. The most recent one, which took place in Rockville, cost the life of a 62-year-old woman in late February.

The woman was walking near the entrance to the Rockville Metro parking lot the evening of Feb. 25, likely on her way home from work, when she was hit by a bus belonging to the company Ride On. She died of her injuries.

Sheriff’s deputies are investigating how this tragedy could have happened. Their inquiry may be complicated by the fact that the bus’ camera system was reportedly not functional. The cameras on a bus parked nearby might have captured footage of the pedestrian accident, which could help determine if the bus driver was speeding or otherwise acting negligently.

As noted above, this was the third time a Ride On bus has hit a pedestrian in Montgomery County this year. One person was hit on Jan. 23, and the other was injured by a bus on Feb. 18. Those pedestrian survived, but most would agree that it is a distressing trend.

Bus drivers and their employers owe the public a duty to take reasonable steps to protect the public from accidents. This is because of the risk of serious harm that comes from an out-of-control bus. If they fail in their duty, they can be held responsible for victims’ financial and non-financial damages.
